Why 10 years of data?

10 years provides enough events to show meaningful patterns while remaining relevant to current conditions. Climate change is shifting some weather patterns, so older data becomes less predictive.

Does this predict future weather events?

Historical frequency is the best available predictor of future severe weather, but it does not account for climate change trends. Areas seeing increasing severe weather may be under-scored.
